I had my assessment on the 13th of decemeber with ian massey and we talked through my work, I seem to have a lot of issues with time managment and that is something I really need to work on, also the quality of my work is something that I feel that I need to work on to progress as a practitioner. My aims over the christmas break is to really focus on drawing and the new project and also looks at some artists to do with the new brief we recieved and also look at context and narrative a lot more in my practice, My last project did have narrative too it but if it was clear or not is another thing. The work overall was ok, not brilliant but ok, I could of contributed a whole lot more but seemed like I didn’t want to ruin toms idea in the process. On this new project I am going to do a piece by myself and focus on my drawing and also take influences from artists that really interest me.
These photos are from the classes visit to the Liverpool Biennial 2012 which was 242 artists work in 27 locations across liverpool. Above is just a selection of work that really interested me and is what work I really enjoyed looking at and understanding. I will defiantly use this page to come back too in my future work.
Mine and Toms final peice.
Me and tom sat down after we had the lecture about the exhibition and thought it would be good to come up with a joint idea and piece of work. Tom is a very dark artist and we talked about how alter ego could be joined in with both of us. We came up with the idea of how everyone has got a dark/sad side and we wanted to represent that there is always sadness whilst always happiness and we needed to create a piece to represent this. so we both did sketches in our sketch books and my first idea was just a quick good/bad which were to figures back to back both holding balloons which joined together which i wanted to be a symmetrical piece.
After i sent this idea to tom he decided it may be too obvious to the viewer and he wanted people to ask there selves questions about it and wanted them to keep guessing. Therefore we settled on one figure which would be dark and striking. so from then on we just used one and started to work on our final piece.
The balloons represent happiness semiotics could defiantly come into use here because when we see balloons we automatically think of party’s and good times to there is that semiotic link within our work which gives it context and narratives
I will post another post of the progression of mine and toms final exhibition piece.
For this I mainly focused on conflict and how we only see this conflict through the media and newspapers, we will probably never experience this. People wont know what its like to go from a peaceful and civilised society to then a destructive life with death and sadness lingering at the door not knowing if your going to live or die …
One example that I feel strongly about is the civil war that is going on in Syria and the people and civilians that are caught up in the middle of this. Their life will have changed massively due to the war that out broke within their own country. Everything they built for their own cities and town will be getting destructed by the people who made them. This is something that interests me and the idea of me building a sculpture of the TV with the devastated city leaking out is probably the best idea.
Hopefully in the next few week I could possibly make the sculpture but instead I am going to do an illustration of what I want it to look like for my final outcome.
